Our Legal Team
We are a professional, friendly and approachable team of solicitors, offering individual expertise on a range of legal issues.
Based in Kendal, our solicitors work with clients across South Lakes, Cumbria and the UK. You will be given expert advice and guidance throughout by one of our solicitors who will deal with your matter personally. Your needs are always the priority for us.
Stephen Pooley, Director
Educated at Barnard Castle School, County Durham and Nottingham University Stephen joined Arnold Greenwood in 1982 and became a partner in the firm in 1986. He specialises in company and commercial law work and in particular in property development and also the hotel and leisure industry. Stephen is married with two children and lives in Kendal. He enjoys being actively involved in the local community and in particular with youth and education. He is a member of Kendal Rotary Club and he is also the former Chair of Governors at Queen Katherine School Kendal. For his sins, Stephen is a life long supporter of Darlington Football Club, which is an affair of the heart rather than the head.
Lee Hughes, Director
After completing his legal studies Lee returned to his home town of Kendal and took up a position with a firm of solicitors in Lancaster in 2008 where he completed his training and continued to work after qualification. Lee joined Arnold Greenwood in June 2014 to work in our busy property department dealing with residential conveyancing. Having spent several years primarily focusing on litigation, Lee seeks to apply this experience to residential conveyancing, and will assist in resolving issues prior to finalisation of a transaction wherever necessary.
When not in work, Lee enjoys various outdoor activities such as fell walking but readily admits that he is a fair weather walker. Lee is also a keen skier and though new to the sport, hopes to spend the next few years improving his technique. Having recently purchased a road bicycle, he hopes to add that to his list of summer activities.
Alison Peel, Director
Alison is originally from mid-Wales and is bilingual. She studied her degree in Bristol and afterwards at The College of Law in Guildford. She trained and qualified in Reading, before moving to Kendal. Alison joined Arnold Greenwood in 2000. She took a 6 month sabbatical in 2007 to fulfil an ambition to do a Round the World trip, travelling to 14 countries from South Africa to South America. On her return, she became a partner in 2008. Alison specialises as a probate solicitor in private client work. She is married with two young boys and enjoys fell walking as a family in the Lake District.
Jennifer Sparks, Associate Solicitor
Jennifer joined Arnold Greenwood as a trainee solicitor in November 2007 after moving to Kendal from her home town of Lancaster. She attended Lancaster Girl's Grammar School, studied law at Keele University and completed the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in Chester. Jennifer qualified as a solicitor in 2010 and has since spent her time at Arnold Greenwood in our busy residential conveyancing department dealing with our clients' sales, purchases, transfers, mortgages and re-mortgages, easements and leases. She enjoys meeting clients and strives to ensure that their full expectations are met.
Outside of work, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her husband and young son, taking trips out to the Lake District, swimming, reading and joining her friends in working their way around the restaurants that Kendal has on offer.
Matthew Sterling, Associate Solicitor
Originally from Oxfordshire, Matthew moved to Cumbria in 2008 and trained in Penrith and Carlisle where he continued to work after qualifying. He joined Arnold Greenwood in January 2013 and is a specialist divorce solicitor accredited by the specialist family law association, Resolution first for family law, in the areas of complex financial and property matters and pensions on divorce. He is experienced in dealing with cases following the breakdown of relationships between co-habiting couples, pre and post nuptial agreements and disputes relating to children, including removal cases with an international element. Matthew offers Skype appointments for clients who live abroad or in other parts of the UK.
In his spare time Matthew enjoys many outdoor sports, in particular mountain biking and travelling to new and exciting places.

She qualified as a solicitor in September 2017 and has become a valued member of the private client department at the firm. She is able to provide assistance to clients on a wide range of matters including wills, powers of attorney, estate planning and estate administration. She is member of the Kendal Dementia Action Alliance and a Dementia Friend.
Outside of work, Anna is Chair of Governors at The Queen Katherine School and on the board of trustees for The Queen Katherine School Multi Academy Trust. She also volunteers at a local homeless shelter and co-organises a quarterly networking event for local young professionals to encourage the local business leaders of the future.
Melanie Weeks, Solicitor
Melanie joined Arnold Greenwood in June 2017 and specialises in private client work including the administration of estates, drafting wills, lasting powers of attorney, court of protection and elderly client matters.
Melanie came to the law later in life after a career in the health service, having practised as a registered general nurse and midwife. Melanie was kept busy as a non-executive director at the local hospital trust in the five years before joining the firm.
Melanie lives in the Lune Valley and outside of the office is an improving cyclist, having undertaken a number of long distance charity rides. Melanie is kept busy by her family and can often be found on the side of a rugby pitch most weekends supporting her children in their favourite sport.
Danielle McNerney, Trainee Solicitor
Danielle hails from Ireland and completed her law degree at the University of Ulster. She then successfully completed her Legal Practice Course through the University of Law in January 2018. Danielle worked for our Estate Agency for two years prior to commencing her role as a Trainee Solicitor in November 2017. Danielle gained valuable experience during her first seat as a member of our Family Law team. She has now commenced her second seat in the Residential Property Department where she will continue to learn and grow her skill set. Outside of work, Danielle loves to run, read, travel and explore the Lake District. Her favourite pastime involves hopping on a plane back to the Emerald Isle to visit her family.
